About Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic's terminal-native coding agent. Rather than living inside an editor, it runs in whatever terminal you already use — reading your codebase, planning multi-step changes, editing files across the project, running shell commands, and committing to git autonomously. It's also available as a VS Code extension, a desktop app, and a web app, but the CLI is its home.
Its defining strengths are reasoning and context. Claude Code runs on Anthropic's Claude models, which consistently rank at or near the top of independent coding benchmarks, and it works with a very large context window — enough to hold and reason about substantial portions of a big codebase at once. This makes it particularly strong on architectural changes, complex refactors, and understanding unfamiliar code, where a deeper grasp of the whole project matters more than fast inline completion.
Because it has no IDE lock-in, Claude Code fits any editor or workflow, and many developers pair it with a dedicated AI IDE rather than choosing between them. It's available through Claude subscription plans and via the Anthropic API on a pay-per-token basis, so cost scales with usage.
