About Freed AI

Freed AI is an ambient clinical documentation tool founded in 2022 by former Meta engineers Erez Druk and Andrey Bannikov, and backed by $34 million in funding including a $30 million Series A led by Sequoia Capital. The platform captures live session audio — in-person, telehealth, or phone — and generates structured clinical notes in 40–60 seconds. It is used by 26,000+ clinicians across 1,300+ clinics and has processed nearly 3 million patient visits per month.

The platform's self-learning AI observes how each clinician edits its generated notes and adapts future outputs to match individual documentation preferences — reducing the editing burden over time. Freed supports custom templates, specialty-specific pre-built formats, patient instruction letters, referral letters, ICD-10 and CPT code suggestions, and E/M level generation. A Chrome extension enables one-click note transfer to any web-based EHR; native EHR push is available on the Premier plan.

Freed is HIPAA-compliant and SOC 2 Type I and Type II certified. All data is stored on US-based Microsoft Azure infrastructure under a HIPAA BAA. Audio is automatically deleted after note completion; AI is trained only on de-identified notes, never on patient PHI. While Freed works across all specialties, its note formats are primarily SOAP-based — therapists who require DAP, BIRP, or other psychotherapy-specific formats will find fewer native options than mental-health-focused competitors.

Pros and cons

What it does well

  • Fastest onboarding in the category — under 5 minutes, works immediately without configuration
  • Self-learning AI adapts to individual documentation style, reducing editing burden over time
  • Notes generated in 40–60 seconds — the fastest turnaround in the therapist AI scribe segment
  • SOC 2 Type I and II certified with automatic audio deletion after note completion
  • Backed by Sequoia Capital — stronger long-term product stability than bootstrapped competitors

Limitations

  • Primarily SOAP-based formats — DAP, BIRP, and other therapy-specific formats not native
  • EHR push integration requires the $104–119/month Premier plan
  • Note cap of 40/month on the $39 Starter plan — unlimited requires $79/month Core
  • General multi-specialty tool — less therapy-specific depth than Mentalyc, Berries, or Supanote AI

Alternatives to Freed AI

Berries logo

Berries

4.2 / 5

A well-built, mental-health-specific AI scribe with strong compliance credentials and a useful free tier — held back by a $79/month Pro price that faces stiff competition from cheaper unlimited alternatives.

Supanote AI logo

Supanote AI

4.2 / 5

A strong therapy-specific AI scribe with the best EHR integration story in the category — Super Fill is genuinely useful — but note caps and unconfirmed SOC 2 status are friction points for high-volume or compliance-sensitive practices.

Scribeberry logo

Scribeberry

4.2 / 5

A physician-built, SOC 2 certified AI scribe with strong psychiatry depth and a genuine free tier — held back by the highest Pro price in the solo-therapist segment and no adaptive style learning.

The verdict

The fastest and easiest AI scribe to set up in the category, with a self-learning engine that genuinely improves over time — but its SOAP-focused formats and general-purpose positioning make it a weaker fit for therapists who need psychotherapy-specific note structures.
