About SchoolAI
SchoolAI is built around two products: Spaces and Mission Control. Spaces are teacher-configured AI environments — the teacher sets the topic, persona, guardrails, and learning objectives, then shares a link with students. Students interact with the AI as a tutor, debate partner, historical figure, or guided practice assistant, all within boundaries the teacher defined. Mission Control gives the teacher a live classroom dashboard during the session, showing each student's conversation in real time.
The teacher-facing side includes "Chat with Dot," an AI planning assistant that generates lesson plans, differentiated activities, exit tickets, rubrics, and parent communication drafts. A browser extension is also available. The student-facing Spaces are the differentiated feature — no other tool in this review category lets a K-12 teacher safely put AI in students' hands with this level of configuration and oversight.
SchoolAI is FERPA and COPPA compliant, SOC 2 Type II certified, 1EdTech certified, and ESSA Level III validated — the ESSA validation qualifies purchases for Title I, II, III, and IV-A federal funding. The platform has raised $32M and serves 1M+ educators. Founded 2023 by Caleb Hicks, former educator and instructional designer with an Apple background.

Pros and cons
What it does well
- Only K-12 tool in this category with a configurable student-facing AI and real-time teacher oversight
- Mission Control dashboard shows every student conversation live — eliminates blind spots
- SOC 2 Type II + ESSA Level III validation opens Title federal funding for district purchases
- $9.99/month Teacher Pro is accessible for individual teachers without district approval
Limitations
- Student Spaces require school or district plan for full deployment — individual teachers are limited to 5 Spaces on free
- Student-facing AI requires teacher configuration time before each use — not instant
- LMS integrations (Canvas, Clever, SIS rostering) locked behind School/District custom plan
